Prior ScoreItUp blogs have discussed studies addressing what type of work makes lawyers happy. Another long-term study by a Harvard psychiatrist focusing on what makes people, in general, happy is posted below.
For those who are tired of reading blogs about this issue, you have come to the wrong company…or at least the wrong blog! Year after year I get many students who wish to go to law school for one reason: money. As I tell all of my classes, that is perfectly fine – there is nothing wrong with money, or wanting to make a lot of it. Studies have shown that making more money tends to make you happier than making less, at least to a point.
However, study after study also reveals that money is not the determining factor to happiness. More significantly, the sacrifices that one often has to make to earn that extra money often make people less happy, if these studies are to be believed. Having done significant work in both BigLaw and as a criminal prosecutor, I can relate firsthand to exactly what these studies reveal, and why.
Students have many options with their future careers, and law school graduates often have many different choices of career paths. Different issues are important to different people, but when making an informed choice about one’s own life it is always worth considering what tends to bring happiness to people.
