The Dangers of…Sitting.

As many long-time readers of ScoreItUp’s 3-L blog know, I have expressed concern about the sedentary lives many lawyers lead.  Indeed, when I first worked at a large law firm, I remember thinking that one thing the job taught me was how to sit.  Here is a recent article in the Orange County Register describing the perils of too much sitting:  http://www.ocregister.com/articles/one-512775-desk-workplace.html

One can spend many long hours working as a lawyer sitting at one’s desk.  Law school also can involve hours in the library sitting and poring through law textbooks.  That’s dangerous, and it’s no laughing matter.

Does it mean one should give up on the idea of becoming a lawyer?  Of course not.  But it does mean one should make some common-sense adjustments to avoid the potential peril of living an excessively sedentary lifestyle.

Do some work standing up.  Pace while reading or thinking through material.  If you are really adventurous, getting a treadmill desk, and working while walking at a slow pace is an excellent idea.

One doesn’t need to radically alter one’s life – just be aware of the issue and make some minor adjustments to your work or school life to help prevent the very real concern of excess sitting.  Good luck, be healthy, and enjoy your life!
