I was watching a Netflix special about the dire consequences of an aircraft manufacturer putting “profits over people.” The documentary made me recall two very similar true stories:
- A famous case law school students are assigned involving a car manufacturer putting “profits over people“: selling a car despite knowing of its exploding gas tank.
- A well-known, and more recent, case I prosecuted against another major car manufacturer accused of the same “profits over people” behavior and cover-up.
These cases have a common underlying theme: ensuring quality costs money. Companies often view cutting corners on quality as a quick fix for higher profits.
If there is one thing I am pleased to say about ScoreItUp, it is that I have always taken the exact opposite approach:
- I teach all ScoreItUp LSAT Prep courses myself (in person, live online and video).
- I don’t outsource or hire novice workers to handle the most important part of LSAT Prep.
- I offer students more “bang for the buck” by cutting out middlemen.
Those features take time and can reduce profits. A former student once told me:
From a business perspective, I wouldn’t run a company the way ScoreItUp does. But from a student’s perspective, the way ScoreItUp runs its business is definitely better.
I couldn’t agree more. But ScoreItUp has never been about maximizing profits. It is about maximizing quality, and doing my best to provide ScoreItUp students with a superior LSAT Prep experience – as well as a series of intangible benefits.
In other words, putting “people over profits.”
